How One of the Most Traditional Economical Sectors Survived - The Case of the Canned Fish Industry in Portugal

Abstract

This paper brings light into a very traditional sector - the canned sector - and describes its importance to Portuguese economy. It shows this sector's relevance in the last 2 centuries and explains how it was embraced by the political regime during the second world war. Among other things, this paper identifies all the canned fish companies operating in Portugal, their locations, how much they produce, main markets, and it reveals their impact on Portugal's Trade Balance and how it affected consumer's preferences all over the years.
