Anglicisms in the Dictionaries of the Albanian Language

Abstract

This paper aims at providing an overview of the quantity and the typology of the English Borrowings in the Dictionaries of the Albanian Language published in the 20th and the 21st centuries. Previous researches and papers on Anglicisms and Pseudo-anglicisms in the Albanian language (outlined in the Bibliography section) have already documented the presence, the increasing quantity and the typology of the English borrowings in the Albanian language mainly in the language of the media (newspapers, radio and TV, social media, etc.) and in different lexical areas like sport, politics, fashion, electronics, economy, etc. The focus of the present research paper is only the English borrowings codified in the Dictionaries of the Albanian Language published by the Academy of Sciences of Albania. The paper highlights also some of the morphological and semantic aspects of the English loans identified in the Albanian Language Dictionaries. The identification of Anglicisms in the Dictionaries of the Albanian Language is a crucial indicator of the indirect language contact between the English and the Albanian language.
